AstraZeneca’s ADHD drug Strattera (atomoxetine) is approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for adults with ADHD, according to its website. The drug was first marketed in the late 1990s under the brand name atomoxetine, and the drug has since gained FDA approval.
The FDA’s approval comes after researchers conducted a controlled study, which revealed that Strattera caused hyperactivity in patients with ADHD, and that it was most likely due to its mechanism of action.
“It was a significant discovery that had the potential to be a major breakthrough in the field of ADHD treatment,” said Dr. Adriane G. Johnson, a professor of pharmacology and medical sciences at Georgetown University who is also a researcher on Strattera.
The FDA’s approval is part of a broader effort to find the drug’s unique side effect profile, which could significantly impact its use as a treatment option for adults with ADHD.
The first-in-class atomoxetine, or Strattera, was developed as an antidepressant to treat depression, and was later approved for use as a first-line treatment for ADHD, according to its website. The medication also was approved for use as an ADHD-free treatment option, and has been available to doctors for more than two decades.

Rosen, who is a professor of medicine at Georgetown University, said that the FDA has been in discussions with manufacturers and is working with the FDA to determine what the drug is and what it does to treat its side effects. The company has also been working with the FDA to develop a treatment for ADHD, and Johnson has expressed interest in further trials.
